Enzo Maresca has been appointed as the new head coach of Manchester City, succeeding Pep Guardiola. Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak confirmed the appointment, highlighting Maresca's previous experience with the club and his developed coaching philosophy.

Maresca previously served as an assistant coach to Guardiola at Manchester City and also led the club's Elite Development Squad. His return to the club is seen as a continuation of a successful era, with Al Mubarak expressing confidence in Maresca's ability to lead the team forward.

"He is one of Pep's assistants at one point in his career so definitely - he will tell you - he is going to have taken a lot of inspiration in the philosophy of Pep, and you see that in his football," Al Mubarak stated. "But he has also evolved his own philosophy. I think Enzo brings a lot to this club."

Al Mubarak added that Maresca brings a unique approach to coaching, influenced by his Italian and Spanish roots. His playing career exposed him to Barcelona's style during its peak years, which significantly shaped his tactical outlook. His close relationship with Guardiola, including regular contact and tactical discussions, was also a factor in his selection.

Maresca's time at Manchester City included his role in the tactical innovations that saw defender John Stones successfully transition to a central midfield role. This period, where Maresca served as head coach of City's Elite Development Squad during the 2020-21 season, left a notable impression on the academy's coaching environment.

Gareth Taylor, who worked with Maresca at City, noted his distinct approach. "Enzo brought something a little bit different," Taylor said. "He certainly had more freedom in the way he set up his teams, because previously most coaches in that environment were strictly told to follow a specific game model."

Al Mubarak also emphasized Maresca's enthusiasm for the significant challenge of managing a club of Manchester City's stature. "This is a big challenge - this scares off many people. The beauty with Enzo is he actually wants that challenge, he loves that challenge."

It is understood that outgoing sporting director Txiki Begiristain recommended Maresca as Guardiola's successor before handing over his responsibilities. Maresca, who has signed a three-year deal, also has prior management experience with Parma, Leicester City, and Chelsea. His Spanish influences are deeply rooted, with his family speaking Spanish as their primary language at home and his children born in Spain.
