Entrepreneur Argues Against Complete Alcohol Abstinence

Super-fit entrepreneur Sahil Bloom has argued against the prevailing trend of complete alcohol abstinence, suggesting that ditching alcohol entirely can lead to a significant decrease in social interactions.

Bloom, an investor and New York Times bestselling author, shared his perspective on the WHOOP podcast, hosted by the brand's founder and CEO Will Ahmed. He observed that many friends who have cut out alcohol completely have also reduced their in-person social engagement by as much as 50 percent.

While acknowledging that alcohol is detrimental to health, Bloom believes that excessive optimization of every health aspect can have its own drawbacks. He shared his personal experience of being overweight and drinking seven nights a week during a demanding period in his finance career, describing his health then as being 'in disarray.'

Currently, Bloom's alcohol consumption is far more restrained. He reports having one drink every other week or one drink a week, typically during meaningful social interactions such as a glass of wine with his wife on date night or a drink with a friend. He values the connection these moments foster and does not intend to give them up.

WHOOP founder Will Ahmed confirmed that his own alcohol consumption negatively impacts his recovery metrics, with three or more drinks typically pushing his score into the red. However, both Bloom and Ahmed cautioned against 'neurotic over-optimisation' within the wellness industry.

Bloom, who combines running with strength training and is preparing for a marathon, emphasized that the fundamentals of healthy living are simple: 30 minutes of daily movement, consumption of whole, unprocessed foods, and seven hours of sleep per night. He suggested that focusing on advanced wellness practices like cold plunges or saunas is unnecessary for most people.

He also advocates for incorporating 'physical side quests' like running a marathon, trying a new sport, or undertaking a challenging hike. These goals can positively influence other areas of life, encouraging better eating habits, improved sleep, and increased structure.

Bloom's philosophy extends beyond physical health, encompassing his concept of 'The 5 Types of Wealth,' which includes financial, physical, social, mental, and time wealth. He views relationships as a crucial form of 'investment' that can grow over time, similar to financial assets.

He adheres to a '90/10 rule,' aiming for discipline in his routines 90-95 percent of the time, while allowing the remaining percentage for spontaneity and enjoyment. This approach, he argues, enables one to fully enjoy these occasional moments of indulgence without undue stress. Please drink responsibly. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation and is not suitable for everyone.
