England's Dominance Over Croatia Sparks Fear Among European Rivals, Claims Alex Scott
Midfielder Alex Scott believes England's 7-0 thrashing of Croatia will intimidate opponents, while Rico Lewis receives a senior call-up.
England midfielder Alex Scott asserted that European rivals will be apprehensive following the team's commanding 7-0 victory over Croatia in Rijeka. Scott, making his first start for England alongside Elliot Anderson, was part of the squad that overwhelmed Croatia in a Nations League match.
Croatian legend Luka Modric expressed shame following the team's heaviest-ever defeat. Scott commented on the significance of such a decisive win, stating, "It's important to put these markers down and beat teams like that to scare opposition in the future." He described the performance as "deadly from the off" and lauded the attacking unit, noting the effectiveness of Anthony Gordon's runs and Jude Bellingham's pervasive influence.
Scott praised Bellingham, calling him "the best midfielder in the world" and "one of the best players in the world for sure." He added that Bellingham serves as a role model for young English players.
Manchester City player Rico Lewis has been added to the senior England squad for their upcoming match against the Czech Republic, his first call-up to the senior team in two years. Lewis last played for the senior squad in 2024.
Modric, who started the match despite recently celebrating his 41st birthday, reflected on the loss, stating, "It is difficult to find an explanation for a performance like that, with no duels, fouls, aggression or cohesion." He continued, "I have been here for 20 years, but it is the first time I have felt ashamed after a match... losing in this way and throwing away the reputation we have built up over all these years is unacceptable."
England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that several players have stepped up in the absence of senior figures like Declan Rice and Cole Palmer. When asked about Scott's potential to challenge Rice for a midfield position, Tuchel responded, "Of course, and he does." He emphasized the need for more options and variety in the squad, noting Scott's consistent high-level performances. "Declan knows about his importance, and he's one of the very best midfielders in Europe. Nothing will change that," Tuchel added, while also highlighting the importance of players like Scott providing depth and competition.
