A new law taking effect in England this September will limit the number of branded school items that parents and guardians must purchase for secondary school students. The Department for Education's regulation mandates that students will not be required to buy more than three branded items, plus a tie.
This legislation was prompted by findings that a quarter of secondary schools in England still mandated four or more branded uniform items in the previous year. Parents have expressed that the cost of school uniforms can be a significant financial strain, with some estimates indicating that uniforms can cost around £60 per child.
While some parents view the new law as a relief, its overall impact will depend on the specific items schools choose to brand. "I think in the long run, if the cost of living keeps going up, we are going to need to push for there to be less and less uniforms with logos, but it will definitely help," said Bex, a mother of two. She, along with other parents, participated in a school uniform swap event held at Tavistock Library, where donated items were made available to families.
The cost of uniforms varies significantly based on school policies regarding branded items. The initiative to limit branded items aims to alleviate some of this financial pressure on families, particularly in light of the increasing cost of living.
