Brydon Carse, an England cricketer with a central contract from the ECB, was briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby on Saturday night. He was subsequently de-arrested, a process that cancels the arrest before formal custody.
However, police are now re-opening an investigation into the incident. Derbyshire police stated that a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night but was de-arrested shortly afterwards after agreeing to leave the area. It is understood the man in question is 31-year-old Carse.
The Cricket Regulator is also investigating the events that led to police handcuffing Carse outside a nightclub. A social-media video reportedly showed the moment of the handcuffing, with Durham teammates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts also visible.
Carse has been removed from England's 16-man squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan at Lord's. Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker has been named as his replacement. The ECB confirmed Carse will not be available for selection while the investigation proceeds and the full facts are obtained.
The Cricket Regulator has a range of potential actions at its disposal, including no further action, a caution, or bringing a charge for a breach of regulations, which could include bringing the game into disrepute. This incident follows a year where other England cricketers, including Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, and Ben Stokes, have been involved in separate alcohol-related incidents.
