Emu Escapes and Leads Deputies on Chase Through California Streets
The unusual pursuit occurred just days after another emu caused traffic disruptions in the same region.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies found themselves in an unusual pursuit when they encountered a loose emu on the streets, leading to a chase through the neighborhood. The incident unfolded days after another emu caused similar traffic disruptions in the area.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office shared details of the unusual call on Saturday, stating, "When we say no two days are the same in this line of work, we really mean it. Just another day on the job… apparently ‘keeping the peace’ sometimes translates to keeping an emu out of traffic long enough for its owner to come get it."
Deputies noted that this was not a repeat of a previous incident, humorously adding, "And no this is not a repeat offender from the CHP Santa Cruz emu incident. Different bird, same agenda: wreak havoc."
The latest feathered fugitive appeared just days after California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers handled a separate emu incident that prompted multiple calls from concerned motorists. CHP Santa Cruz posted on Wednesday that they had safely corralled the bird and that its owner had arrived on the scene. "Fortunately, the Emu’s owner quickly arrived on the scene, and we managed to safely corral their feathery friend. A big shoutout and thank you to everyone who called in to help us handle this unique situation!"
Social media users reacted to the news with amusement, making jokes about the emu's actions, with some referencing the Liberty Mutual insurance advertising campaign featuring an emu character.
