Emmy Rossum has broken her silence regarding a pay dispute during her time on the Showtime series "Shameless," emphasizing that she did not intend for the situation to affect her co-stars or delay the show's renewal. The actress, who played Fiona Gallagher, sought to be compensated at the same salary level as her co-star William H. Macy.
Rossum stated that she had requested salary increases on multiple occasions since the show's third season, but these requests were repeatedly denied. The dispute intensified ahead of the show's eighth season in 2016, as Rossum had also taken on directing responsibilities for some episodes. She recounted initiating salary discussions again, which were initially met with resistance.
"It's always scary asking for what you think you're worth," Rossum said, discussing the negotiation process. "You have to take up space in the room and it's their job to make the show for as little as possible to make the most profit."
Public Revelation and Resolution
The pay negotiations became public knowledge while Rossum was on a writer's retreat. She described being "shook" upon seeing a headline on Twitter that reported a stalemate in the negotiations. Rossum expressed that she never anticipated the private business negotiation would become public, potentially impacting the entire cast and crew.
Despite her initial shock, the public attention surrounding the dispute led to a swift resolution. Just one day after the row was reported, Rossum reached an agreement with Warner Bros. Television. She later confirmed her return for the eighth season via an Instagram post, stating, "Playing Fiona Gallagher has been one of the great privileges of my life. I'm so happy to continue w my SHAMELESS family! Back to work in May!"
Rossum clarified that her focus was not solely on monetary gain but on fairness and equal valuation for equal work. "It was really about being valued equally when I was doing equal work," she explained. "For me, it was as simple as that. I was very, very happy when we got it, and very, very happy for what it seemingly did for other women."
Rossum remained with "Shameless" until its conclusion in 2021, after 11 seasons. The actress has since married director Sam Esmail, with whom she has two children.
