Emmerdale Star Kevin Mathurin Shares Heart Attack Experience
Actor Kevin Mathurin, known for his role as Vicar Charles Anderson in Emmerdale, has revealed he suffered a heart attack due to stress and pressure, prompting a life-altering change.
Emmerdale actor Kevin Mathurin, 53, has disclosed that he experienced a heart attack, an event he describes as having "changed his life forever." Mathurin, who has portrayed Vicar Charles Anderson on the soap opera since 2020, is now focusing on his recovery and personal well-being.
Last year, Mathurin began experiencing chest pains following a period of significant stress and pressure. He was taken to A&E where doctors discovered a blocked artery, leading to heart failure. Following this health scare, he has been prescribed medication and has committed to an overhauled lifestyle to manage his blood pressure and heart rate.
Mathurin shared a video documenting his hospital stay and recovery, emphasizing his renewed focus on spending time with loved ones. He detailed in a caption that external issues had impacted his well-being, leading to anxiety, stress, and suppressed anger. The actor also mentioned the recent loss of a close friend to cancer, which he was unable to attend the funeral for due to work commitments. This accumulation of events led him to ignore pains in his ribs and arms for a week while continuing with filming and other activities.
It was his partner, Nikki Beatnik, who encouraged him to book an ECG scan. Shortly after returning home from the hospital, his doctor contacted him with instructions to go directly to A&E. Mathurin described the situation as a "long story short," explaining that a blocked artery had damaged a portion of his heart, resulting in an abnormal heartbeat, heart failure, and a minor heart attack. Despite feeling physically fine internally, the experience alarmed him and his family due to his week-long neglect of his body's signals.
During his stay at King's Hospital in London, Mathurin was closely monitored, and an angiogram was performed to assess the severity of the blockages. Fortunately, he did not require surgery for stents. His treatment plan involves medication, exercise, and a healthy diet to maintain healthy blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol levels.
The hospital stay provided Mathurin with ample time for reflection, leading him to reset and reevaluate his priorities and life choices. This experience has significantly altered his perspective on people, places, and things. He expressed a desire to witness his children grow into adults and be present to guide them, to spend quality time with Nikki, and to be fully present when with his family. He also aims to be a reliable colleague and appreciate his profession while remaining open to future opportunities.
Mathurin extended his gratitude to the doctors and nurses at King's Hospital and the cardiac physiotherapists at Lewisham Hospital, thanking the NHS. He concluded by stating, "Fear makes you ill. Shuts you down and stand still. Love your people, love life and keep moving."
Fans and co-stars, including Ash Palmisciano who plays Matty Barton, have shared well-wishes for Mathurin's recovery. Prior to his role in Emmerdale, Mathurin had theater experience, appearing in productions such as "The Butterfly Lion," "Of Mice and Men," and "The Visit." He joined the Emmerdale cast during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since appeared in approximately 400 episodes. Mathurin has been in a relationship with DJ Nikki Beatnik since 2011, and they have an 11-year-old son named Harley.
