House Majority Whip Tom Emmer defended President Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil, a move intended to lower diesel prices ahead of the midterm elections. Emmer, R-Minn., described the deal as another instance of the president "thinking out of the box" and "listening to the American people."
The decision marked a reversal of previous policy, which had imposed sanctions on Russian oil amid tensions with Russia over the war in Ukraine. However, some experts suggest the plan is unlikely to significantly impact U.S. diesel prices and may primarily benefit Russia.
During an appearance on ABC News' "This Week," Emmer also addressed concerns about the upcoming midterm elections. He urged voters to participate, stating, "You show up and vote, we’re going to be fine," in an effort to defend Republican majorities in the House and Senate.
Emmer characterized current fuel prices, including $4 gasoline and $6 diesel, as "unacceptable," noting that Republicans share this view. He also commented on Trump's earlier statements regarding potential actions against Iran, praising the president's military responses and his willingness to take actions that others had not.
Regarding comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about livestreaming the execution of the Fort Hood shooter, Emmer deferred to President Trump. "Personally, I’m not in favor of the death penalty. But I’ll tell you this, I am so happy that we have a president, a chief executive in this country who will make a decision," Emmer said. "He will hold the criminals and the terrorists accountable. And frankly, if you come to this country or you’re radicalized in this country to kill Americans and disrupt our way of life, there should be significant consequences."
