Emmanuel Petit Criticizes Liverpool's £123 Million Signing of Bradley Barcola
Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes Liverpool overpaid significantly for Bradley Barcola, suggesting a maximum fee of £70 million.
Emmanuel Petit, a former Arsenal and France midfielder, has stated that Liverpool paid "double what they should have" for winger Bradley Barcola, with the reported transfer fee reaching £123 million. Petit suggested that a maximum of £60-70 million would have been a more appropriate valuation for the player.
Barcola, 24, has yet to score or provide an assist in his six appearances for Liverpool since joining from Paris Saint-Germain. Some observers have expressed concern that he could be another high-profile signing who fails to meet expectations, drawing comparisons to other costly acquisitions.
Petit commented on the transfer, telling talkSPORT, "Everyone in France knows it. They splashed too much money on Barcola. I would never put £120million on the table for him." He added that Barcola's previous performances at PSG were often enhanced by the team around him and that he "doesn't get the regularity during the game."
The winger did not participate in pre-season training after the World Cup due to the protracted transfer negotiations and has himself acknowledged the need to adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Premier League.
"Ligue 1 is very physical. But here, I would say it’s more physical in terms of the running you have to do. The games are end-to-end," Barcola explained. "The intensity is so high. But that’s also why I came here. It’s a new challenge for me to take on."
Despite his struggles to make an immediate impact, Petit acknowledged Barcola's quality but cautioned against excessive spending on players who may be overrated.
Some pundits have noted that emerging players like Victor Munoz and Lewis Koumas appeared more influential in recent matches than the high-priced signings. Barcola has played a total of 336 minutes for Liverpool, the equivalent of less than four full games. In the 2024-25 season, Barcola recorded 23 goals and 20 assists for PSG across all competitions. He has previously shown his potential with goals against Manchester City and Chelsea in European competition.
