Emma Heming Willis Honors Bruce Willis as 'Driving Force' in Dementia Advocacy
Wife shares tribute to actor during World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week.
Emma Heming Willis is honoring her husband, Bruce Willis, calling him the "driving force" behind her advocacy work related to his dementia diagnosis.
During World Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) Awareness Week, Heming Willis, 50, shared a touching tribute to the actor, 71, on Instagram. She posted a rare photo of Willis wearing a bucket hat and a T-shirt featuring graphics that appeared to be designed by one of his children. "I can't go through World FTD Awareness Week without talking about Bruce. He is the driving force behind my advocacy," she wrote.
She continued, "He has opened so many doors for me in this work, and I will continue to walk through them." Heming Willis stated that she "will not let his diagnosis be in vain" and expressed confidence that Willis would be proud that he is helping families living with FTD and other forms of dementia, as well as their care partners, to be seen and heard.
In her closing remarks, she wrote, "In this next chapter of his life, Bruce continues to build on his legacy. He is, and always will be, a f*****g legend. And I am so proud to be his wife."
Willis's daughter Scout Willis commented on the post, expressing her pride and love for Heming Willis. Other fans also shared supportive messages.
The iconic actor was diagnosed with FTD in 2023, three years after his family publicly shared that he was stepping away from his acting career following an initial diagnosis of aphasia. In August, Heming Willis spoke candidly about her conflicting emotions while celebrating her 50th birthday amidst her husband's health battle.
FTD is a progressive form of dementia that affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, often resulting in changes in personality, behavior, or language. Unlike Alzheimer's disease, FTD does not primarily affect memory, a common misconception according to Heming Willis.
Heming Willis is now Willis's primary caregiver. The couple resides separately, with Willis living in a dedicated residence with a full-time care team and their two young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. Heming Willis has spoken openly about the emotional toll of caregiving, describing it as a state of "ambiguous loss" and "consistently in grief."
She launched The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund in March, an initiative aimed at confronting FTD through awareness campaigns, funding early-stage research, and supporting caregivers. Last year, she also published a book titled "The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path," offering guidance for caregivers navigating dementia.
Willis's family, including his ex-wife Demi Moore and their three adult daughters, have rallied around him since his diagnosis, aiming to bring global attention to the debilitating disease and its impact on individuals and families.
