Emma Barnett is reportedly set to depart the BBC's Today programme after a two-year tenure, with sources indicating she will transition to hosting a podcast for BBC Sounds. The move would leave three primary anchors on the Radio 4 news flagship: Justin Webb, Nick Robinson, and Anna Foster.
Confirmation of Barnett's departure is anticipated within weeks. When approached for comment, a BBC spokesperson did not deny the claims. A source within the broadcaster stated that the program has a new editor with fresh ideas and acknowledged that speculation surrounding the show and its presenters is common.
The i Paper reported that Barnett, 41, is eager for her "next challenge," which is expected to be a current affairs podcast. She has reportedly been in extensive discussions with BBC management about this potential move. Barnett currently hosts her own weekly podcast, "Ready to Talk with Emma Barnett."
Barnett joined the Today programme in May 2024. Her time on the show has been characterized by reports of a strained relationship with co-presenter Nick Robinson. Last year, Barnett reportedly complained to then-BBC chief executive Deborah Turness about Robinson, describing him as "overbearing." It was noted that a 90-day period passed without the two presenting together.
More recently, on Thursday, Barnett engaged in a series of clashes with Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch during an interview concerning Badenoch's response to Labour's spending review.
The speculation about Barnett's exit follows the recent departure of fellow presenter Amol Rajan, who hosted his final episode of the Today programme shortly before leaving to develop his own YouTube show, "The Amol Rajan Connection." Last Saturday, the program's Saturday edition featured only one presenter, Anna Foster, with correspondents filling in following Rajan's exit.
A source told the i Paper that the show requires a new full-time presenter who will commit to a longer tenure, emphasizing listener desire for stability. Both Rajan and Barnett served relatively short terms compared to previous hosts.
The BBC has not yet announced a replacement for Rajan, 43, who is also slated to appear in the upcoming second series of "The Celebrity Traitors." Announcements regarding a replacement were previously stated to be forthcoming.
Potential candidates to join the Today programme include BBC Europe editor Katya Adler and chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman, both of whom provided cover during the summer. Political editor Chris Mason is also considered a possibility, although management may prefer to retain him in his current role, particularly in light of potential early election calls by Andy Burnham.
