Emirati Princess Admits Child Neglect After Cocaine Binge in London
Mahrah Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi's royal family, pleaded guilty to child neglect after being found with a collapsed companion near a busy road while a child in her care played nearby.
Mahrah Al Nahyan, a 32-year-old member of Abu Dhabi's royal family, has admitted to child neglect after a weekend cocaine binge in a Kensington Airbnb led to her and a male companion being found collapsed in the street. The incident occurred in June, when passersby discovered Al Nahyan slumped near railings with a three-year-old child playing perilously close to traffic. A passerby captured video footage of the scene, showing Al Nahyan shoeless and unconscious, with an unconscious man lying on a nearby doorstep.
Al Nahyan, whose family is estimated to be worth £250 billion, appeared at Southwark Crown Court where she pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect. Prosecutors stated that bystanders intervened when they noticed the child was unattended and shoeless, playing near moving traffic. Members of the public cared for the toddler until police arrived.
According to court testimony, Al Nahyan and her male friend had rented a £200-a-night Airbnb in Kensington for a 48-hour drug-fueled party that prosecutors believe involved cocaine. Neighbors reported hearing loud music and shouting from the property during the nights leading up to the incident. One neighbor recounted Al Nahyan being locked out of the Airbnb after a food delivery, and another neighbor tried to rouse her when she was found slumped on the pavement on a hot afternoon.
When Al Nahyan awoke after about 30 minutes, she reportedly behaved erratically and questioned the concern shown by those present. Following her arrest, officers found drug paraphernalia but no illicit substances. Her defense counsel stated that Al Nahyan has been undergoing drug addiction treatment at the Priory centre since July and expressed remorse.
Al Nahyan's permanent residence is a £1.6 million penthouse apartment in Wandsworth, south London, formerly owned by Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor. The property is located in a Grade II-listed Victorian building that was originally built as an asylum for orphaned girls.
Mr Justice Johnson KC sentenced Al Nahyan to a two-year community order with a rehabilitation requirement. She was also fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs, noting her monthly allowance of £8,000. The judge emphasized the recklessness and disregard for the child's safety demonstrated by leaving them barefoot in the street while under the influence of drugs, highlighting the serious risk of injury or harm.
Al Nahyan's defense indicated plans to complete a three-month treatment program and continue with outpatient treatment and Narcotics Anonymous meetings afterward.
