Elon Musk Warns of Retaliation Against Democrats Probing His Empire
The billionaire's threat comes amid reports that Democrats plan to scrutinize his companies' federal contracts and operations if they gain control of Congress.
Elon Musk has issued a stark warning of retaliation against Democrats who might investigate his business empire, signaling a potential clash should the party gain control of Congress in the upcoming midterms.
The world's wealthiest individual stated on his social media platform X that those who initiate conflict with him should expect him to pursue those "really pulling the strings, not just their puppets."
This threat follows reports, including one from Politico, suggesting that Democratic lawmakers are preparing to scrutinize Musk's companies if they win control of the House or Senate. The potential investigations could focus on lucrative federal contracts held by SpaceX, Musk's involvement in government efficiency initiatives, and his role in disrupting Ukraine's access to satellite internet.
Musk's remarks also appeared to be a response to comments made by tech journalist Kara Swisher, who suggested on a podcast that Musk could face significant consequences if Democrats regain congressional power. Swisher specifically mentioned potential investigations into Musk's leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and questions surrounding his business dealings and government contracts. In response to Swisher's remarks, Musk retorted on X, stating, "Sounds like Swisher really wants to go to prison."
The stakes are considerable, involving billions of dollars in government contracts. SpaceX is a major supplier to NASA and the U.S. national security establishment. Its Starlink satellite network has been crucial for Ukraine's military communications during the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Democrats have previously raised concerns about reports that Musk ordered a Starlink slowdown that affected Ukrainian forces. Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, questioned the implications of a private company's decisions impacting a conflict of significant strategic interest to the United States. Musk, however, has maintained that decisions regarding Starlink usage and restrictions are ultimately made by the U.S. military and the president.
Furthermore, Musk's tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration is another area of potential scrutiny. Democrats have raised questions about DOGE's access to sensitive government information, its handling of federal spending, and its role in workforce reductions and disruptions to government agencies. If Democrats secure a majority, they could leverage powerful congressional committees to demand documents, hold hearings, and compel testimony, bringing Musk's dealings with Washington under intense focus.
Musk has also become a significant political donor, reportedly spending substantial amounts on the current midterm election cycle, largely in support of Republican candidates. This political investment increases the stakes for Musk, whose businesses operate in sectors heavily influenced by federal contracts, regulations, and government policy.
Any formal investigations would be contingent on the election outcome, committee priorities, and the specific allegations lawmakers choose to pursue. However, Musk has made his intentions clear: he is prepared to actively defend his business interests against congressional probes.
