Elon Musk Warns of 'Permanent One-Party State' if Democrats Win Midterms

Elon Musk, identified as the largest political donor in U.S. history, has voiced strong concerns that a Democratic victory in the upcoming midterms could lead to a "permanent one-party state" and the "end of democracy." In a post on his social media platform X, Musk outlined what he described as a "worst-case scenario" should Democrats gain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Musk's primary apprehension is the creation of a liberal supermajority that he believes would be irreversible. He posited three potential outcomes if Democrats achieve this dominance. First, he suggested that Democrats would seek to grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, thereby increasing their representation in Congress. Second, Musk alleged that Democrats would "open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority." While Democrats have supported pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and enhanced border security, no major Democratic proposal advocates for open borders.

Finally, Musk warned that Democrats would attempt to expand the size of the Supreme Court to establish a liberal majority on the bench. He stated, "This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word." Consequently, Musk urged voters to support Republican senators, deeming this the most critical issue.

Federal filings indicate that Musk has contributed over $445 million to federal political committees through mid-October. This figure, when combined with approximately $300 million donated mostly to Republicans in the 2024 election cycle, brings his total political donations over the past few years to over $735 million. This amount significantly surpasses the contributions of other major donors in recent election cycles.

Musk also asserted that Democrats aim to "cement one-party rule forever and make 'democracy' meaningless, as they have done in California." According to data from the prediction market Kalshi, Democrats are currently favored to win both the House and the Senate, with projections showing a 92% chance of winning the House and a 70% chance of winning the Senate. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has been conducting rallies across the country to support Republican candidates, focusing on districts where the GOP is considered to be on defense.
