Elon Musk's Ex Defends Controversial Streamer Hasan Piker Amidst Political Scrutiny
Ashley St. Clair argues that attacks on Piker are a right-wing 'psy-op' distracting from progressive political movements.
Ashley St. Clair, who shares a child with Tesla founder Elon Musk, has defended controversial left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, characterizing the criticism against him as politically motivated "hysteria." St. Clair told CNN that the ongoing backlash serves as a diversion from the genuine rise of progressive politics and democratic socialism.
"Any of these news outlets that are feeding into the Hasan hysteria are playing into a right-wing psy-op to conflate Hasan with the figurehead of the left, and then use him as this smear campaign against what is a very real rise in progressive politics and democratic socialism," St. Clair stated.
St. Clair, who is currently suing Musk's company X, believes focusing on influencers like Piker detracts from the actions of actual politicians. She finds it "ridiculous" and a "waste of time" for Democratic candidates to be pressured into denouncing Piker, whom she describes as having no institutional power.
Piker, a self-identified Marxist influencer, has gained a significant following with over three million followers on Twitch and nearly two million subscribers across YouTube and Instagram. He has engaged with or supported numerous Democratic political figures, including Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
His past controversial statements, including remarks where he suggested America "deserved" the September 11 terror attacks, have made him a polarizing figure. Piker later apologized for these remarks. The comments have been leveraged in Republican attack ads, notably against El-Sayed in his campaign against Trump-endorsed Mike Rogers.
El-Sayed has defended his association with Piker, acknowledging disagreements on certain statements about terrorism while emphasizing the importance of reaching Piker's audience. His campaign has noted that while they do not endorse all of Piker's views, his platform is valuable for engaging younger voters.
Vice President JD Vance criticized Democrats for not disavowing Piker, asserting that the "radical left" is exerting undue influence over the party. Vance characterized Piker's views as "straight up Marxism" and described some of his comments, such as calling the U.S. the "top dog in terrorism," as "completely insane."
Vance told the Daily Mail that the Democratic party is no longer focused on the American people but is instead controlled by the "far-left radical left." He also noted Piker's admiration for communist China as an economic and political model for the United States.
