Elon Musk announced Wednesday that his artificial intelligence platform, Grok Imagine, will produce a full-length, "historically accurate" film adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" before the end of the year. The billionaire owner of X posted on the platform, formerly known as Twitter, that the AI-generated movie will be faithful to the original author's intentions.
Musk's announcement comes as Christopher Nolan's recently released film adaptation of "The Odyssey" faces scrutiny over its casting choices. Musk has been vocal in his criticism, particularly regarding the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy. He reposted a user's claim in February that casting Nyong'o was an "insult" to Homer, as the poem describes Helen as fair-skinned and blonde.
At the time, Musk commented on X, "Chris Nolan has lost his integrity," and agreed with a post by conservative commentator Matt Walsh asserting that no one genuinely believes Nyong'o is the world's most beautiful woman, suggesting Nolan cast her to avoid accusations of racism.
Musk also claimed in May that Nolan's film features a diverse cast because the director seeks awards. Nolan's "The Odyssey" achieved his best global box office opening ever, grossing more than $264 million in its debut weekend.
Musk shared a three-minute scene generated by Grok Imagine, stating that the AI's capability to create such content underscores his plan for a feature-length movie. The AI platform is expected to deliver the complete film by the end of 2024.
