Elon Musk has proposed giving filmmaker Mel Gibson $100 million to produce a historically accurate adaptation of Homer's 'The Odyssey,' to be filmed entirely in Homeric Greek.

Musk's proposition emerged on X, formerly Twitter, after a user suggested that Musk should fund such a project for Gibson. The proposal stipulated that the film must feature "painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting," with all dialogue taken directly from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek. Musk responded to the suggestion with "I'm down."

This initiative appears to be part of Musk's ongoing criticism of Christopher Nolan's recent film, 'The Odyssey.' Musk has repeatedly expressed disapproval of the casting choices in Nolan's film, particularly the inclusion of Black actress Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and transgender actor Elliot Page. In January, Musk stated that Nolan had "lost his integrity" for casting Nyong'o. He also questioned the casting of Page, calling reports of Page playing Achilles "one of the dumbest and twisted things I've ever heard," although Page reportedly plays the Greek soldier Sinon in the film.

Despite Musk's critiques, Nolan's 'The Odyssey' achieved a strong opening weekend in the U.S., grossing $124 million domestically and $263.7 million worldwide, marking Nolan's largest global opening to date.

The Odyssey was released in the US on July 17 and had a $124 million opening weekend domestically. It also marked Nolan's largest global opening ever, racking in $263.7 million

In addition to his proposal for Gibson, Musk also indicated that his AI assistant, Grok Imagine, would create a "full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer" before the end of the year. He shared an AI-generated video depicting a scene from 'The Odyssey' with dialogue in Greek, which, along with his post, garnered over 18 million views.

Christopher Nolan has previously drawn parallels between AI and a "Trojan horse," suggesting it is a transparent threat.

Gibson's current professional focus is reportedly on the sequel to 'The Passion of the Christ,' titled 'The Resurrection of the Christ,' which is slated for a two-part release in May 2027 and May 2028.
