Elon Musk Bankrolls GOP Senate Hopes in Texas Race

Billionaire Elon Musk has played a significant role in financing Republican efforts in Texas, particularly supporting the campaign against Democratic candidate James Talarico in the state's Senate race, according to new campaign finance filings.

Musk is identified as the primary sponsor of a prominent group backing Republican Ken Paxton. Filings with the Federal Election Commission show that on September 9, Musk contributed $75 million to the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the main Senate Republican super PAC. The following day, SLF transferred this entire sum to Texas PAC, an organization established shortly before to support Paxton's candidacy.

Musk made another contribution of $83 million to SLF on September 23. The super PAC subsequently transferred this amount to Texas PAC on September 24. Combined, these two payments totaling $158 million were reported by Texas PAC in its latest filings. These transfers have enabled the Senate GOP group to allocate resources to support Paxton without impacting funds designated for other competitive races across the country.

Republicans are currently striving to maintain their four-seat majority in the Senate, facing competitive races in states including North Carolina, Maine, Iowa, Ohio, Kansas, and Alaska, in addition to Texas. Democrats are defending open Senate seats in Michigan, New Hampshire, and Minnesota.

Musk's financial backing for the Texas race is part of a larger $276 million expenditure on the midterm elections. He has also invested over $76 million into AMERICA PAC, a super PAC focused on engaging low-propensity Trump voters, despite former President Trump not being on the ballot. Other contributions from Musk between July and September include $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the primary House Republican super PAC; $10 million to another PAC supporting Paxton; $10 million to the Republican Governors Association; and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

While Democratic candidates in some competitive House and Senate races have out-raised their Republican opponents, such as Talarico who raised a record $64 million in the third quarter compared to Paxton's $18 million, Republicans continue to benefit from substantial financial support from outside groups like Musk's. This external funding aids Republican candidates in their efforts to reach voters.
