A federal court hearing for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was delayed Monday when Mangione became trapped in a courthouse elevator.

Mangione, 28, was en route to the courtroom with U.S. Marshals when the elevator stopped for approximately 20 minutes. The cause of the malfunction was not immediately specified.

Following the incident, Judge Margaret Garnett rescheduled Mangione's federal trial to January 2027. This decision was made to accommodate a separate state trial scheduled to begin on September 8. The federal trial had originally been slated to commence in October.

Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, is accused of fatally shooting Thompson on a Midtown sidewalk in December 2024. Authorities have suggested the motive may have been anger over the country's healthcare system. Mangione is described as a wealthy heir with a prep-school and Ivy League education.
