Electronic Arts Shuts Down BioWare Studio After Decades of Gaming History
Disappointing sales and controversies surrounding identity politics themes contributed to the closure of the studio behind 'Mass Effect' and 'Dragon Age'.
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the closure of its long-standing game development studio, BioWare, after 31 years in operation. The decision comes in the wake of a series of high-profile disappointments and controversies, including the underperformance of its latest title, "Dragon Age: The Veilguard."
BioWare, founded in 1995, became renowned for its critically acclaimed role-playing games, such as "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age: Origins." However, in recent years, the studio has struggled with titles like "Mass Effect: Andromeda" and "Anthem," which received mixed to negative reviews. "Mass Effect: Andromeda," released in 2017, faced criticism for its technical issues and narrative shortcomings. "Anthem," launched in 2019, failed to meet player expectations for its live-service model.
The studio's most recent game, "Dragon Age: The Veilguard," also fell short of sales projections. According to reports, the game attracted approximately 1.5 million players in its launch quarter, nearly 50% below EA's expectations. This underperformance is cited as a primary factor leading to EA's decision to shutter the studio.
"The Veilguard" also generated controversy for its inclusion of themes related to identity politics. The game featured character customization options that included top surgery scars and a scene where a nonbinary character is accidentally misgendered, followed by a fictional apology ritual. Game director Corinne Busche, who is transgender, stated that her identity influenced the game's themes, telling Inverse, "For me personally, one of the greatest gifts about being trans is the amount of introspection it forces upon you."
These narrative choices sparked debate among players and industry observers. Marty O’Donnell, composer for the "Halo" series, commented on the situation, suggesting that BioWare's focus on what he termed "woke ideology" alienated its fanbase and contributed to the game's commercial failure. "EA took BioWare and ruined it by preaching to their audience," O'Donnell stated. "More companies like Bungie and BioWare will be shuttered until the executives wake up and realize fans want politics out of their games."
In a company blog post on October 21, BioWare stated, "There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games and supporting one another through this transition." Early development on the next "Mass Effect" project has also been ended as a result of the closure.
BioWare's closure marks the end of an era for a studio that has been a significant force in the role-playing game genre for over three decades. The studio's legacy includes beloved franchises that have defined narrative-driven gaming for many players.
