An electrical fire that erupted on the top floor of a five-story apartment building in Manhattan's Theater District on Saturday morning resulted in one fatality and left a second person in stable condition. The fire broke out around 11:15 a.m. in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, specifically on West 49th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues.
Nearly 80 New York City Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service personnel responded to the scene. Fire marshals have since determined the blaze to be accidental in origin.
Two civilians were rescued from the burning structure and transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Both were initially in critical condition. One of the individuals later died, while the other's condition was upgraded to stable.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. The building, described as a brownstone, was reportedly constructed in the early 1900s.
