An 84-year-old woman evacuated her home in Willenhall, West Midlands, grabbing her pet dog and budgie as a wildfire consumed her property and damaged neighboring residences. The fire, which spread rapidly through gardens on Thursday, left three bungalows severely damaged, with two, including the woman's home, losing their roofs entirely.
Paula Fenton, the homeowner, lost nearly all her belongings, including irreplaceable items like hearing aids, jewelry, and her wedding ring. Her granddaughter, Jade Fenton, 32, stated that her grandmother fled in her slippers and pajamas, with nothing left of the bungalow.
The incident occurred during a period of extreme drought and heatwave conditions. Firefighters responded to multiple fires across the region, with another blaze in Stourbridge reportedly destroying 19 homes. The severity of the fires prompted a government warning issued to millions of mobile phones on Friday, cautioning against activities that could ignite wildfires.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the country's state as being like "a tinderbox" due to the dry conditions, highlighting the increased risk of such destructive fires.
