Elderly Sailor and Dog Rescued After Months Lost at Sea

An 86-year-old sailor and his dog have been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard nearly 500 miles off the coast of San Diego. The pair had been missing since August, having embarked on a trans-Pacific voyage from Astoria, Oregon, to Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Their journey aboard the sailboat Willow Wind began in August. The sailor and his dog were last heard from on August 20, prompting a search when they failed to reach their destination. The U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area received a report of the overdue vessel on October 24, and an emergency radio beacon alert from the Willow Wind was received on October 27.

Coast Guard crews from Air Station Sacramento and other stations were dispatched, and nearby vessels were also alerted to assist in the search. The sailboat was eventually located, and the motor vessel Grand Orion arrived on the scene early the next morning. However, hazardous sea conditions temporarily halted rescue operations.

On the following day, rescue crews were able to pull the sailor and his dog from the damaged sailboat, which had its sails torn. The pair were then transferred to a Coast Guard Air Station San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter about 170 miles west of Ventura.

Medical personnel evaluated the sailor, who was reportedly weak and had difficulty walking but sustained no major injuries. He was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital for further evaluation. The dog was also found and appears to be in good health.

By the time of their rescue, the sailor and his dog had traveled more than 1,000 nautical miles, significantly further than the planned route to Pago Pago. The typical transit time for such a voyage is between four and seven weeks.

"We are grateful to the merchant mariners and Coast Guard crews whose coordinated efforts brought this search to a successful conclusion," stated Coast Guard Cmdr. Jason Nguyen. "This case highlights the importance of carrying emergency communication equipment and creating a float plan so someone ashore knows your voyage plans."
