A 74-year-old man is in critical condition after being assaulted during his early morning walk in Yennora, Greater Western Sydney. The man was discovered unconscious on Orchardleigh Street around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday by passersby, who provided immediate medical assistance.

Police stated that initial investigations suggest the man was attacked while on his regular morning walk. He was treated at the scene for severe head injuries before being transported to Westmead Hospital, where he underwent surgery. His family is currently by his side.

Acting Fairfield City Police Area Commander Brenton Sommerville noted that the man had been out for approximately 30 minutes prior to the incident. "We're aware the man was performing his usual morning walk, which he does in the area," Sommerville said during a press conference.

Neighbour Joshua Albrown told ABC News that he witnessed an individual punch the elderly man from behind. "The neighbour across the road; one guy, he punched him from the back," Albrown stated. "He's a very peaceful man... and I'm still like wondering what's going on with him and why the guy punched him from the back."

Another resident, John Sau, confirmed the victim's predictable routine. "He's nice and quiet and do walking [exercises] every morning, that's what I saw," Sau said.

Sommerville expressed gratitude for the public's assistance, stating, "It happened in the early hours of the morning when an elderly, vulnerable member of the community was left on the roadside, and their actions greatly assisted the police response."
