Elderly Cyclist Fatally Injured in Central Park Collision With Dog

A 71-year-old cyclist sustained fatal injuries after colliding with an unleashed dog in Central Park on Monday morning. The incident occurred around 8:20 a.m. on the East Drive near East 84th Street.

According to police, the cyclist was riding northbound when the dog, which had reportedly entered the roadway, entered his path. The impact caused the cyclist to be thrown over his handlebars and onto the pavement, where he sustained a head injury. The cyclist was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Sources indicated that the dog's owner, a woman, allowed the animal to be off-leash in that area of the park because dogs are permitted to be unleashed before 9 a.m. The dog was unharmed in the collision.

The identity of the cyclist has not been released pending notification of his family. The incident is under investigation.

A bicycle with a damaged helmet rests in front of a police vehicle following a fatal collision in Central Park.
