Elderly Couple Targeted in Terrifying Four-Minute Home Burglary
Masked assailants sprayed CS gas and stole jewelry and electronics before locking victims inside their home.
Three men have been sentenced to a combined total of over 16 years for a terrifying aggravated burglary that targeted an elderly couple in their Rochester, Kent home on January 12. The incident, which lasted just four minutes, saw masked assailants ambush the wife as she took out a rubbish bag, wrestle her to the ground, and spray CS gas in her husband's eyes before making off with watches, jewelry, and mobile phones.
CCTV footage captured the moment the woman, in her 70s, was confronted by a masked man outside her property. Another assailant then rushed into the house, while a third dragged the woman back inside. The intruders closed the patio door and proceeded with the robbery, attempting to remove rings from the woman's fingers and beating her husband to force him to hand over his watch.
After the robbery, the men locked the couple inside their home, preventing them from calling for help. The stolen vehicle used in the escape, a stolen car with false plates, was found by Kent Police the following day.
A police investigation revealed that the ringleader, Jessie Eastwood, 34, had been planning the burglary for months, communicating with a serving prisoner about the details of the crime, including victim descriptions and the specific items to be stolen. He described the planned heist to the prisoner as a "horror story."
Thomas O'Sullivan, 27, provided Eastwood with information about the couple's property, despite knowing the victims and having previously been on holiday with them. The third offender, Christopher David, 41, was identified through forensic testing of a jewelry box.
All three men pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary. Eastwood was sentenced to seven years and eight months, O'Sullivan received two years and five months, and David was sentenced to six years and nine months at Maidstone Crown Court.
Detective Constable Aaron Chapman stated that Eastwood spent nearly a year planning the burglary. "Officers worked quickly to uncover his identity and within weeks he had been charged along with his co-offenders," Chapman said. "The victims have remained courageous and steadfast throughout the investigation despite what they were forced to go through at the hands of their attackers. We thank them for their support of the case and hope the result will bring them peace and reassurance."
