Elderly Astrophysics Professor Suffers Broken Bones After NYC Subway Shove

A 90-year-old astrophysics professor sustained broken bones after being violently pushed from a New York City subway car on October 6. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. as CG Wang was attempting to exit a southbound F train at the Lexington Avenue and 53rd Street station in Midtown Manhattan.

According to Wang, he asked a man to move so he could exit the train and take the escalator. The man then shoved him out of the car. "I was pushed so hard, I flew out of the train," Wang told ABC 7. He fell on his hip, also injuring his shoulder and head.

The severe hip injury required Wang to undergo a hip replacement surgery. He is currently recovering from his injuries, which his son, Juin Wang, described as devastating.

"Who does this?" Juin Wang questioned. "Who would shove a 90-year-old, frail, visually impaired man?"

Prior to the attack, CG Wang had not experienced any serious personal injuries or required hospitalization for himself. Despite his age, he continued to commute to his Midtown office to conduct research.

The suspect, who is still at large, shoved him after Wang asked him to move out of the way of the door to get off the train around 1pm

The NYPD is seeking the public's assistance in identifying and locating the suspect, releasing a photograph of the individual. The investigation into the assault is ongoing, with no updates available as of Friday, October 22, 2026.

This incident follows a separate case in August where Derrick Mills, accused of pushing an elderly man onto subway tracks in 2023, had a court outburst. Mills faces charges for allegedly shoving Trevor Crawford, 77, onto the tracks at the 68th Street-Hunter College subway station after becoming angry that Crawford allegedly stared at him. Crawford was rescued by MTA workers before a train arrived, and Mills fled the scene. The assault on Crawford occurred on September 12, 2023.
