Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, is drawing criticism for his responses when questioned about his association with streamer Hasan Piker. El-Sayed has been accused of attempting to distance himself from Piker, a political commentator with a large social media following, after Piker's past controversial remarks resurfaced.

During recent campaign trail interactions, El-Sayed characterized inquiries about Piker as a distraction from the core issues of the Michigan race. When pressed by reporters, El-Sayed stated that he was "not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California" and called such discussions "not a serious conversation." He further referred to Piker as "a single streamer from California" when asked to condemn him.

These remarks have led to significant online backlash, with critics accusing El-Sayed of appearing to panic and trying to distance himself from Piker after previously engaging with him.

Piker, who has approximately 10 million social media followers, has been a subject of controversy for past comments, including one in which he stated "America deserved 9/11." This has created a flashpoint within the Democratic Party.

Despite El-Sayed's attempts to downplay the connection, Piker himself has spoken about being invited to campaign for El-Sayed. At an April rally, Piker stated, "The reason why, when Abdul asked for me to come on this journey with him, I said yes, absolutely." In a subsequent interview, Piker also said El-Sayed had asked him to "stump" for his campaign.

El-Sayed's campaign previously issued a statement addressing the controversy. "I want to be crystal clear, nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople," the statement said. This followed an uproar over Piker's comments on a viral audio clip involving a Jewish Michigan state senator.

El-Sayed is set to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the race for the seat currently held by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. The outcome of this election could be significant in determining control of the Senate.
