Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed released updated financial disclosures Monday night, revealing assets worth up to $2.1 million, including a newly disclosed rental property in Dubai. The disclosures came just hours before a primary debate with his opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich.
The filing adds new details to previously reported financials, including a third real estate holding in Dubai valued up to $250,000. El-Sayed and his wife also listed a liability to a Dubai-based real estate company, Majid Al Futtaim Tilal, valued between $50,000 and $100,000.
In addition to the overseas property, the filing indicated a change in El-Sayed's employment status in Michigan. He reported working as a consultant for Wayne County, earning $72,000, while also listing a salary of $82,750 for the same county. This contrasts with a salaried position listed at $278,900 the previous year.
Stevens, an establishment candidate endorsed by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has repeatedly questioned El-Sayed's financial transparency and net worth. At a previous debate, Stevens stated, "I am the only one running for United States Senate in Michigan who is not a millionaire." She used the newly released disclosures at Monday's debate to press El-Sayed on his tax returns.
"You talk about getting money out of politics and putting money in people’s pockets, but still no one knows who’s putting the money in your pocket," Stevens said, referencing El-Sayed's decision not to release full tax returns. El-Sayed, who had sought an extension for his 2026 filings, sidestepped the comment, calling it a "distraction from the issues."
The progressive challenger, El-Sayed, has garnered support from figures like Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for his platform, which includes challenging the U.S.-Israel relationship, abolishing ICE, and advocating for universal healthcare. Stevens has sought to portray him as out of touch with working-class voters due to his wealth.
Overall, El-Sayed's financial disclosures for 2025 and 2026 place his net worth between $870,000 and $2.1 million. The primary election is scheduled for one week after the debate. El-Sayed's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the disclosures and their timing.
