Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has faced increased scrutiny regarding his ties to controversial socialist streamer Hasan Piker, following a narrow victory in the Tuesday primary. El-Sayed, who narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens by fewer than 15,000 votes, has been hesitant to distance himself from Piker, a prominent supporter whose past comments have drawn criticism.

Piker, described as a leftist provocateur, has been associated with anti-American and anti-Israel statements, including remarks about the September 11 attacks and the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. When asked by The New York Times about retaining Piker as a surrogate for the general election, El-Sayed responded, "Look, I’m just a lot more focused on who I’m campaigning to."

Concerns about El-Sayed's rhetoric have been amplified by his own past statements and his association with Piker. In a video message following a March 12 incident where a man drove a vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, El-Sayed noted the attacker had lost family members in an Israeli airstrike and stated that "violence always begets violence." Critics interpreted these remarks as a justification for the attack.

These associations have led to apprehension among some Jewish residents in Michigan. Joe Tigay, a voter who previously supported Barack Obama, expressed that he is more inclined to support Republican nominee Mike Rogers unless El-Sayed reaches out to the Jewish community, suggesting that an affirmation of Israel's right to exist would be significant.

Rabbi Aaron Starr of Congregation Shaarey Zedek echoed these sentiments, stating that the community's fear stems from El-Sayed's comments regarding the Temple Israel incident and his platforming of Piker. He drew a parallel to a hypothetical scenario where a right-wing politician would support a member of the Ku Klux Klan, emphasizing the seriousness of El-Sayed's association with Piker.

El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Director, secured his primary win after polls had indicated a larger lead in the week prior to the election. He will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the general election in November.
