El Pollo Loco, a California-based fast-food chain, has announced plans to open 15 new locations in New York, with the first expected to open in Queens in mid-2027. The expansion into the New York City market is part of the company's broader growth strategy, which has seen its stock climb over 40% in the past year.

“New York represents an important milestone for El Pollo Loco and a clear proof point in our disciplined growth strategy,” said Liz Williams, CEO of El Pollo Loco, in a press release. “With committed franchise partners and our first New York lease secured, we are excited to introduce the East Coast to the fire-grilled flavor and hospitality that have defined El Pollo Loco for five decades.”

The company attributes this expansion to consumer interest in "protein-forward meals made with quality ingredients." El Pollo Loco currently operates over 500 company-owned and franchised restaurants across ten U.S. states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The chain was founded in Mexico in 1975 and opened its first U.S. location in Los Angeles.

El Pollo Loco's expansion comes amid a competitive landscape for chicken-focused fast-food chains. McDonald's is increasing its chicken offerings with hand-breaded chicken menu items being tested in nearly 200 restaurants, and Taco Bell has reintroduced chicken nuggets as part of its strategy to appeal to younger consumers and compete with established poultry players.
