Eight teenagers have been charged with murder following a fatal brawl outside a house party in Logan. The incident resulted in the death of 21-year-old Jongkuch Peter Kur Jongkuch Achieu, who was pronounced dead after his life support was switched off on Saturday, five days after the alleged attack.
Police were called to the short-term rental property on Discovery Boulevard in the early hours of July 26, responding to reports of a large gathering. Upon arrival, officers discovered significant damage to vehicles parked on the street and to the residence itself. As attendees fled the scene, Mr. Achieu was found on a nearby street with severe head injuries. He received CPR and was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition, but could not be saved.
Law enforcement made four arrests on Thursday and an additional four on Sunday. Those arrested include three 18-year-olds and one 17-year-old, with court appearances scheduled for Monday. The earlier arrests on Thursday involved two 18-year-olds and two 19-year-olds.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with participants running through the area and causing damage. Neighbors reported hearing the disturbance and fearing for their safety, with some taking shelter until police arrived.
Members of the South Sudanese community, to which Mr. Achieu belonged, have shared tributes and called for measures to prevent similar tragedies involving young people and gangs. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
