Authorities are investigating a complex incident in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, where eight people, including six children and two adults, were found dead inside a residence on Friday. Some of the victims sustained gunshot wounds, according to officials.

Fire personnel initially responded to the area Friday morning after reports of a smoke odor but did not locate a fire. Several hours later, crews returned to the same residence following calls of white smoke and discovered the deceased individuals inside.

Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jake Sparks described the scene as "complicated" and "complex" as the investigation is ongoing. The deceased are believed to be members of a single family, with the children estimated to be between 5 and 15 years old. Not all victims have been positively identified.

The exact causes of death are pending autopsies, which are expected to be completed over the weekend. Investigators are exploring the possibility that the fire was intentionally set and that the incident could involve a murder-suicide, though Sparks emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages. Authorities are not currently considering any suspects from outside the home, but noted that this could change.

Arson investigators from the Michigan State Police are assisting at the scene. The fire is believed to have originated inside the home, but its exact origin and cause remain under investigation.
