Edinburgh Secure Thrilling URC Opening Win Over Ulster
Despite an injury crisis, Edinburgh overcame a significant second-half surge from Ulster to claim an unexpected victory in their United Rugby Championship opener.
Edinburgh secured a dramatic 34-29 victory over Ulster in their opening United Rugby Championship match at Ravenhill, holding on to their lead after a strong start. The Scottish side established a commanding 34-5 advantage early in the second half, but Ulster mounted a significant comeback, scoring three tries in ten minutes.
Edinburgh's coach, Sean Everitt, acknowledged the tension of the closing stages. "It’s a difficult place to come and play and we’d be fools to think they weren’t going to come back," Everitt stated. "The momentum shifted quickly and we just couldn’t slow them down. Yes, it got quite nervous in the end!"
The visitors, who have been dealing with a notable injury list including Scotland winger Darcy Graham, surprised their hosts with an aggressive opening. Tries from Freddy Douglas, Malelili Satala, Hector Patterson, and Piers O’Conor, all converted by James Grayson who also added two penalties, propelled Edinburgh to what seemed like an unassailable lead.
Ulster's response came through Zac Ward, David McCann, and Keynan Knox, narrowing the deficit. A late penalty from Jack Murphy brought Ulster within five points with five minutes remaining, raising hopes of a comeback. However, Edinburgh demonstrated resilience to secure the win.
