Myles Murphy, son of comedian Eddie Murphy, made a surprise appearance and performed a stand-up comedy set at the West Side Comedy Club in New York City last Saturday. This performance marks a notable moment for Murphy, who has been pursuing comedy for less than a year.
Murphy, 33, is the fourth of Eddie Murphy's 10 children. His mother is former model Nicole Mitchell Murphy, who was married to Eddie Murphy from 1993 to 2006. By day, Myles Murphy works as a screenwriter, but comedy has long been a personal aspiration. He has previously performed at various clubs in Los Angeles.
Following his set at the West Side Comedy Club, Murphy reportedly received a history lesson about his father's career from comedian Jeffrey Gurian. Gurian shared anecdotes about Eddie Murphy's early days in comedy, including how he was discovered by his father at The Comic Strip in 1985. Eddie Murphy got his start at the club and was managed by its owner, Richie Tienken, for the initial 11 years of his career.
Gurian recounted a story for Myles about his father's pivotal five-minute spot on "Saturday Night Live." According to Gurian, "SNL" producer Jean Doumanian asked Joe Piscopo to fill time one night, and Piscopo suggested the newcomer Eddie Murphy take the spot. Eddie Murphy, initially hesitant due to his use of profanity, ultimately performed the set, which became a significant break. Gurian also explained how Eddie Murphy's contract was renewed at a higher salary after Richie Tienken reminded the producers of his impact on the show.
Meanwhile, Gurian, upon leaving the club, heard Piscopo discussing Eddie Murphy on his radio show. Gurian then attended Piscopo's broadcast and shared the story of Eddie Murphy's "SNL" debut live on air.
Myles Murphy is slated to perform in Los Angeles at the Laugh Factory for a taped comedy special titled "Spot Light."
