Eddie Howe has announced his departure as head coach of Newcastle United, confirming the decision in a statement released by the club on Friday. Howe, who has led the team for nearly five years, reached an agreement to leave his role with immediate effect after contemplating his future over the summer. The club has appointed German coach Matthias Jaissle as his successor ahead of the 2026-27 season.

In his farewell message, Howe described his tenure as a "privilege of a lifetime." He explained that after a period of personal reflection, he felt it was the right time to step away, recharge, and take a break. "After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break," Howe stated.

He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized that he always prioritized the club's best interests. "It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United," he said. "It is difficult to put into words what this club, the city and its supporters mean, and will always mean, to me and my family." Howe recalled the team's journey from fighting relegation in his first season to achieving Champions League qualification and ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought with the 2025 Carabao Cup victory.

Howe expressed gratitude to the club's ownership, including Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Jamie Reuben, Jacobo Solís, and the Public Investment Fund (PIF), as well as CEO David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson, for their trust. He also thanked his coaching staff and the players for their contributions. "Finally, and most importantly, thank you to our incredible supporters. Your passion and loyalty have inspired me every single day," Howe added.

Newcastle United's CEO, David Hopkinson, conveyed the club's deep gratitude and respect for Howe and his staff. "While we are naturally disappointed to see Eddie leave, we remain immensely thankful for everything he has done for the club," Hopkinson said. "On behalf of our owners, Board, players, staff and supporters, I would like to extend sincere thanks to Eddie for his outstanding service and leadership, and wish him and his family every success and happiness for the future."

Howe's departure comes during a period of significant player movement for Newcastle. Striker Alexander Isak was lost last September, and winger Anthony Gordon and midfielder Sandro Tonali have been sold to Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively, this summer. Additionally, Arsenal has reached an agreement in principle to sign midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for a reported £77 million plus add-ons. Guimaraes had informed the club of his desire to leave several weeks ago and did not join the squad for their pre-season training camp.
