Ed Sheeran Welcomes Isaac Slade as Surprise Guest in Atlanta Amid Tour Controversy
Former The Fray frontman performs in Atlanta after other opening acts withdraw due to Macklemore's controversial pro-Palestine statements.
Ed Sheeran performed in Atlanta on Saturday night with Isaac Slade, former frontman of The Fray, joining him as a surprise "special guest." This appearance came after Sheeran's other scheduled opening acts withdrew from his Loop Tour, a situation that arose following controversy over Macklemore's outspoken support for Palestine.
Just hours before the Atlanta show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sheeran's official social media announced a special guest would take the stage. Eyewitness accounts shared on social media confirmed Slade performed an opening set. He sang two hits from The Fray: "How to Save a Life" and "You Found Me."
During his time on stage, Slade expressed his honor at being present and addressed the current global climate. "Everybody seems to be taking sides in this world and that's good," he told the audience. "What's happening over there is wrong but if we're going to get through it, we're going to need people to step into that middle place, that common ground." He continued, advocating for peace as a concept that holds "enough beauty, enough tragedy, enough sorrow, enough joy and life if we learn how to integrate it and hold each other in balance." Slade concluded his remarks by stating, "We will find a way through this together."
Sheeran's North American tour has faced significant public backlash in recent weeks. The controversy intensified after Macklemore performed at two shows on The Loop Tour, delivering a "Free Palestine" speech and performing his song "Hind's Hall." Following Macklemore's set, stadium owners reportedly threatened to cancel subsequent shows if he remained on the opening act lineup. While shows at Gillette Stadium, owned by Robert Kraft, were eventually canceled due to weather, the preceding events led to further fallout.
In the aftermath, Sheeran's supporting acts, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and the backing band Beoga, withdrew from the tour. Sheeran himself issued an apology in Philadelphia on September 19, stating he had been "making mistakes" and was "so, so sorry" for the drama. He explained that the situation had placed him "in the middle of an important, passionate argument about freedom of speech on the most complex issue on the planet." Sheeran emphasized his commitment to creating a "safe space for everybody" and honoring his commitment to his fans, which he said led him to continue the tour as the sole headliner.
Slade has previously made surprise guest appearances at Sheeran's shows, including a duet of "How to Save a Life" in Toronto in late August. Sheeran is continuing The Loop Tour across the United States before concluding in Tampa, Florida, in early November. He is then scheduled to embark on a short tour of Latin America, with the world tour wrapping up in Mexico City on December 11.
