Ed Sheeran's Charity Gig Raises $1 Million Amidst Political Controversy
The pop star hosted a fundraising event for children in Suffolk while navigating backlash from his handling of pro-Palestine comments made by rapper Macklemore.
Ed Sheeran performed at a charity event in New York City last month, successfully raising $1 million for underprivileged children in his home county of Suffolk. The event took place during a period of public scrutiny for Sheeran, stemming from rapper Macklemore's dismissal as a support act on Sheeran's "Mathematics" tour.
Macklemore was removed from the tour in September after making pro-Palestine comments during opening slots at Sheeran's shows in New Jersey. Following Macklemore's departure, Sheeran's other opening acts—Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe—along with the backing band Beoga, announced they would leave the tour in solidarity with the rapper and Palestine. The situation led to public debate, with some critics accusing Sheeran of "bowing to the mob" after he addressed the controversy on stage.
Despite the tour drama, Sheeran participated in the fundraising event, which was held in honor of Ipswich Town Chairman and CEO Mark Ashton's Lentonbrook Foundation. Hosted by former Ipswich Town captain Matt Holland, the foundation supports charitable organizations focused on children and young people in Suffolk.
Mark Ashton expressed his gratitude for the event's success, stating, "Raising $1 million in one evening is an incredible achievement, and I'm hugely grateful to Ed, our guests and everyone who helped make it happen." He emphasized that the funds would directly benefit Suffolk, saying, "Suffolk was at the heart of it. We're incredibly proud to be bringing significant new funding into the county, with every dollar dedicated to helping children and young people in our communities."
Earlier in September, Sheeran had addressed the controversy during a concert in Philadelphia. He told an audience of 50,000 fans that the preceding week had been "one of the worst weeks of my life." He also acknowledged the difficult situation, calling the events in Gaza "catastrophic and unjustifiable" and Hamas's October 7 attacks "horrific." His remarks, delivered from an autocue, drew criticism from commentators like Piers Morgan, who felt Sheeran had been pressured into making a public statement. Others defended Sheeran, arguing that as a singer, he was not expected to provide off-the-cuff political commentary and that using a teleprompter indicated caution rather than a lack of conviction.
Sheeran also shared that he had considered canceling the tour but was ultimately motivated to continue by the strong ticket sales and the support of his audience, noting, "I look at the end of the week, and I see 50,000 people who haven't abandoned me."
