Ed Sheeran Removes Stage Element, Cites Fear After Macklemore Controversy

Ed Sheeran modified his concert setup in Philadelphia on Saturday, removing the "B stage" typically featured in his "Mathematics Tour" due to concerns about potential audience backlash.

During his performance at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran addressed the decision, explaining to the crowd that he was "afraid of what might happen." This marks his first performance since Macklemore, who was slated to be an opening act, was removed from the tour. The controversy escalated when Macklemore made "Free Palestine" comments on stage, leading to the withdrawal of other openers, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe, in solidarity.

Sheeran stated, "I didn’t know what this audience would be like. I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me. I didn’t know if people would be angry at me." He apologized for the deviation from his usual show format, acknowledging his fear as the reason for removing the B stage.

The Grammy winner also addressed the situation at the start of the show, appearing emotional and tearing up as he spoke. "This is not usually how I would open the show, but before I play some songs tonight, I hope it’s OK if I say a few words about this last week," he said. He acknowledged making mistakes and expressed deep apologies, clarifying that while he did not intend to be an "activist musician," he found himself "in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet."

Sheeran previously addressed the controversy via Instagram, stating he was "not complicit" in the conflict and that Macklemore's removal was a decision made by the promoter, not himself. He explained that Macklemore's contract was with the promoter, Messina Touring Group, and not directly with him.

Messina Touring Group had announced Macklemore's removal after discussions with stakeholders, citing that "several venues" did not permit concerts with Macklemore on the lineup. Macklemore himself posted on social media, asserting that advocating for equal treatment of all humans should not be controversial and that his intention was to ensure people in Gaza and the West Bank knew they were not forgotten.

Sheeran concluded his on-stage remarks by emphasizing his commitment to his fans and the importance of his concerts being a safe space for everyone. He affirmed his intention to continue the tour as scheduled, performing solo without opening acts.
