Ed Sheeran has been fined for failing to insure his Aston Martin, which he stated had been in a workshop since 2021 and kept off public roads. The DVLA prosecuted Sheeran in a behind-closed-doors hearing.

Sheeran submitted a letter of explanation accompanying his guilty plea, stating that the vehicle remained within the control of the workshop and had been inoperable since 2021. He explained that there had been no risk to the public from uninsured driving as he had not had physical possession or practical control of the vehicle. The car is currently being restored and converted into an electric vehicle.

He apologized for using court resources and claimed he never received an initial offer for an out-of-court fine, which he said he would have paid immediately. Sheeran described the situation as a "genuine administrative misunderstanding" and confirmed the car was declared off-road with a SORN notice on February 1 of the current year.

Sheeran's case was handled under the Single Justice Procedure system, which allows cases to be heard in any magistrates' court regardless of the offense's location. He was among 1,451 individuals across England and Wales convicted last week for failing to insure their vehicles.
