Rapper Macklemore's outspoken political activism has drawn criticism, with questions arising about his collaborator Ed Sheeran's silence amidst Macklemore's anti-Israel statements made during their shared national tour. Macklemore has previously used his platform to voice strong political opinions, including accusations against Israel and support for pro-Palestinian movements.

Macklemore has been a vocal critic of Israel, releasing songs that describe its actions as "genocide" and "apartheid." He has also supported the pro-Hamas campus protest movement and donated concert proceeds to UNRWA, an organization that has faced scrutiny over alleged employee involvement in the October 7th attacks. Investigations have since indicated that over 100 UNRWA employees may have participated in or been affiliated with Hamas. Macklemore's past involvement with groups like the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, which has partnered with organizations previously shut down for supporting Hamas, has also been highlighted.

In September 2024, Macklemore headlined a festival in Seattle called "Palestine Will Live Forever." During this event, he reportedly told the crowd, "Yeah, f--k America," which led to backlash. The festival, held in a predominantly Jewish community area on the Jewish Sabbath, prompted local synagogues to spend significantly on private security. Reports indicate that Jewish residents were harassed, and those displaying American and Israeli flags faced intimidation and flag theft.

Macklemore's statements have previously had professional consequences. Following the "Palestine Will Live Forever" festival, the Seattle Mariners stopped playing his music at home games, and he was dropped from a festival in Las Vegas. Additionally, the Seattle Kraken hockey franchise and Sounders soccer team, where Macklemore held minority ownership, released a statement denouncing his "increasingly divisive comments."

In contrast to his current silence, Sheeran has previously addressed political associations with his concerts. After performing for wounded Israeli soldiers in 2024, Sheeran publicly distanced himself, calling implications of playing specifically for them "damaging" and urging for thorough research before posting such information. He stated that the tickets were sourced by a charity for a large-scale public concert.

However, Sheeran has not publicly commented on Macklemore's recent on-stage pronouncements. During their tour, Macklemore, often wearing a keffiyeh, has repeatedly proclaimed "Free Palestine" and referred to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a "terrorist organization." He has explicitly stated that a reason he joined the tour was to "stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine."

Despite repeated requests for comment, Sheeran has remained silent. Macklemore repeated similar statements on subsequent dates of the tour. The situation draws a parallel to Sheeran's prior reaction to politically charged situations surrounding his concerts, highlighting a perceived difference in his responses to political controversy originating from his chosen opening acts compared to events he has directly participated in.
