Ed Sheeran Adds New Openers to Loop Tour Amid Controversy
Isaac Slade and Brooks Rosser join Sheeran's tour after previous acts withdrew over Macklemore's pro-Palestine statements.
Ed Sheeran has enlisted Isaac Slade, former lead singer of The Fray, and American Idol contestant Brooks Rosser as opening acts for the remaining dates of his Loop Tour. This decision comes after Sheeran's initial supporting acts, including Macklemore, Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Beoga, withdrew from the tour.
Macklemore was removed from the lineup after making pro-Palestine remarks and performing a protest song during two New Jersey shows. Following his removal, Sheeran's other opening acts resigned in solidarity. Sheeran subsequently apologized for the controversy, stating he was "making mistakes" and "so, so sorry."
Slade confirmed on Instagram that he will perform at upcoming shows in Indianapolis on October 10, Charlotte on October 17, Arlington on October 24, and Tampa on November 7. Rosser will join Sheeran for the Indianapolis show. Sheeran will perform without openers at casino shows in Hollywood, Florida, on October 29 and 30.
Slade, who has previously made guest appearances with Sheeran, performed a duet of The Fray's hit "How to Save a Life" with him in Toronto. During a recent solo performance at Sheeran's Atlanta show, Slade spoke about finding common ground amid conflict, stating, "Everybody seems to be taking sides in this world and that's good. What's happening over there is wrong but if we're going to get through it, we're going to need people to step into that middle place, that common ground."
Rosser, a contestant on season 24 of American Idol, expressed his excitement on Instagram about opening for Sheeran at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The controversy began when Macklemore voiced support for Palestine and performed his song "Hind's Hall" during his opening sets. Reports indicated that venue owners, such as Robert Kraft, threatened to cancel Sheeran's shows if Macklemore remained on the bill. The Gillette Stadium shows were eventually canceled due to weather.
Sheeran has continued his tour solo, expressing concern about freedom of speech being encumbered. He stated his intention for his music to create a "safe space for everybody" and that honoring his commitment to his fans is essential.
Macklemore has announced a sold-out three-date "Free Palestine" tour in Dublin, Paris, and London with artists who have also spoken out in support of Palestine.
Sheeran's Loop Tour will conclude in Tampa, Florida, in early November, followed by dates in Latin America and a final show in Mexico City on December 11.
