Ed Sheeran has broken his silence regarding the removal of Macklemore from his tour dates following the rapper's "Free Palestine" speech. Sheeran clarified that his concerts are intended as spaces for unity and joy, not political platforms, while expressing his personal distress over the conflict.

Macklemore's performances at Sheeran's New Jersey shows on September 4 and 5 included chants of "Free Palestine" and projections of images from Gaza. The rapper also delivered a speech advocating for the freedom of all people and stated that those in Gaza and the occupied West Bank had not been forgotten. He referred to ICE as a "terrorist organization" and called for the freedom of Palestine, Cuba, Congo, Sudan, and Iran.

Following these events, venue owners communicated to promoters that they would cancel the shows if Macklemore continued as a supporting act. Sheeran stated that he engaged in extensive discussions with venues and promoters, including direct talks with activists on both sides, in an attempt to find a resolution. "Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter's decision, it was not mine," Sheeran explained. "Macklemore's contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me."

Sheeran emphasized that he would not let down fans who had already made plans, nor would he abandon his touring crew and other musicians reliant on the shows for income. He reaffirmed his commitment to using his platform to bring people together from diverse backgrounds and cultures, noting that his shows are about unity, joy, escapism, and love, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. "I am not complicit," Sheeran stated. "I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have them, and it doesn't mean I don't care."

He further elaborated on his decision to refrain from using his professional platform for political statements, citing his audience, which often includes young people and children from various backgrounds, who do not expect political discourse at his concerts. "There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics," he said. "My audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum."

Sheeran expressed respect for Macklemore's conviction to speak out for his beliefs but suggested that different approaches can lead to the same goal of peace. "I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed. If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change," he added.

Macklemore's actions had previously drawn criticism, including a boycott petition initiated by the Israeli-American Council. The petition argued that Sheeran's concerts were not political rallies and questioned the appropriateness of an opening act using a global concert platform for a one-sided political agenda. Fan reactions on social media were divided, with some supporting Macklemore's stance and others accusing him of anti-Semitic rhetoric.

In a past incident in 2014, Macklemore issued an apology after wearing a costume that was widely condemned as an anti-Semitic Jewish caricature. In response to the recent controversy, Macklemore appeared to reinforce his position by sharing a clip of his speech with the caption, "Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial."
