Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Controversy, Criticizes Venue Censorship
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran spoke out about the Gaza conflict and the importance of free speech during a pre-concert address in Philadelphia.
Ed Sheeran used his platform before a Saturday night concert in Philadelphia to speak about the ongoing controversy surrounding Gaza and to voice his concerns about venues potentially censoring performers.
"This is not usually how I open a show, but before I play some songs tonight I hope it’s OK if I say a few words about this last week," Sheeran told the crowd. He acknowledged making difficult decisions and mistakes in the wake of the controversy, which involved his opening acts being dropped after a Palestinian activist was removed from a show.
Sheeran stated that his concerts have always been intended as a safe space for everyone, and he is committed to his fans. He explained that he is continuing his current tour but expressed deep worry about the idea of venues pre-approving content from performers, calling it something that should not occur in the free world.
While he has historically avoided being a political commentator to keep his music focused on unity, Sheeran said the situation in Gaza is a humanitarian issue he can no longer ignore. He condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7 as horrific and a compounding of centuries of Jewish pain.
Simultaneously, he described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate." He also voiced concern over the systemic injustices he sees unfolding in the West Bank.
"My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives," Sheeran said.
He added that he is engaging with various individuals to understand how he can contribute to helping victims of the conflict, emphasizing his need to listen and learn more about the complexities of the situation.
