Ed Miliband Faces Criticism Over Meeting With Iranian Foreign Minister Amid Hostage Concerns

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has been criticized for his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Critics labeled the engagement a "shameful" encounter and a "propaganda win" for Iran.
The Foreign Office stated that during the meeting, Miliband warned Araghchi that Britain "will not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil" from groups linked to Iran. He also raised the case of Craig and Lindsay Foreman, a couple from East Sussex detained in Tehran's Evin prison since January 2025. The Foremans were convicted of espionage and sentenced to 10 years in prison in February, charges they deny. Miliband reiterated calls for their immediate release, emphasizing their welfare as a priority for the UK government.
However, Conservative MP Alicia Kearns condemned the meeting, stating that Miliband "owes Parliament, British Jews, and the Foreman family an explanation and an apology." She characterized the handshake as a propaganda victory for Tehran and a deeply inappropriate gesture given the Iranian regime's actions, including alleged attacks on Jewish communities, attempted assassinations on UK soil, cyber attacks, and the sentencing of the Foreman couple.
The Foremans lost an appeal against their convictions in June. Craig Foreman reportedly received an additional two-year sentence for speaking to media outlets. The UK government had previously described their 10-year sentences as "completely appalling and totally unjustifiable."
During the discussion, Miliband and Araghchi also addressed the conflict in the Middle East, the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and the UK's commitment to countering threats from Iranian-linked groups within the UK. The Foreign Office reported that Miliband urged Iran to pursue de-escalation and diplomacy, and stressed the impact of continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz on global security and economic stability. He also reiterated the UK's resolve to combat such threats, particularly those targeting the British Jewish community, and outlined government measures in response.
