Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., secured a victory in the Massachusetts Democratic primary against challenger Rep. Seth Moulton, drawing praise from progressive activists and commentators. The win, which keeps the 80-year-old senator in contention for another term, was celebrated by figures such as Twitch streamer Hasan Piker.

Piker lauded Markey's success, stating on X that "It’s very clear that the Dem voters care more about policies and having a progressive represent them in the Senate than age! Another w for our movement!" This sentiment highlighted the campaign's focus on progressive issues as a key differentiator.

Markey, who has served in Congress for five decades, positioned himself as the race's true progressive, emphasizing his support for issues like transgender rights in sports and aggressive climate change legislation, including a Green New Deal. He repeatedly challenged Moulton's progressive credentials, contrasting his own stances with those of his younger opponent.

"Trans athletes should be able to play," Markey stated, reflecting a position he argued represented Massachusetts. "And Seth Moulton does not." This stance on transgender athletes has been a point of contention, with Republicans using it as a campaign issue and some Democrats having largely avoided it.

The Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate advocacy group, congratulated Markey, calling him a "leading climate champion in the fight for a Green New Deal." The group, which advocates for policies to combat climate change and what it terms "fascism," sees Markey's platform as aligned with its goals.

Former Obama advisor David Axelrod noted Markey's political evolution, recalling that the senator was first elected to Congress 50 years ago as a social conservative. Axelrod observed that Markey's embrace of issues such as the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and transgender rights in his later career has bolstered his support among the progressive left in a strongly Democratic state.

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also offered congratulations, highlighting Markey's focus on economic inequality and support for working families. Sanders, like Markey, remains a prominent figure in progressive politics despite his age.

Having won the primary, Markey is now expected to face Republican challenger Kevin O'Connor in the general election on November 3. Markey won his last reelection bid with 66.2% of the vote against O'Connor in the deeply blue state of Massachusetts.
