High street stores have reported that solar eclipse glasses are "sold out everywhere" as individuals across Scotland scrambled to find suitable protective eyewear for an upcoming celestial event. The UK is set to experience its most dramatic partial solar eclipse in nearly three decades on Wednesday evening, with up to 95% of the Sun expected to be obscured by the Moon.

The scarcity of specialized glasses has left many online shoppers concerned that any orders placed may not arrive in time for the eclipse, which will begin in Scotland around 6:00 PM and last for approximately two hours.

Experts emphasize the critical importance of never looking directly at the Sun, even for brief periods, as it can cause permanent damage to the retina and lead to vision problems. Eclipse glasses are designed to filter out harmful rays, offering a safe way to view the phenomenon.

Legitimate eclipse glasses should bear the safety certification ISO 12312-2 or ISO 12312-2:2015. In the past, newspapers have distributed free pairs for similar events, and schoolchildren have been commonly pictured using them.

Signs in shop windows have reflected the widespread depletion of stock, with some stating, "Sorry, we are SOLD OUT of solar eclipse glasses! To our knowledge, everywhere else is sold out too." Another noted, "We do not sell glasses for watching the solar eclipse."

The Moon's transit across the Sun is expected to begin in Scotland at approximately 6:00 PM, with the peak of the eclipse occurring later in the evening. The event will offer a rare opportunity for astronomical observation, provided viewers use appropriate safety measures.
