EastEnders Stars Reunite After 24 Years for National Rail Campaign

Actors Natalie Cassidy and Jack Ryder, known for their roles as Sonia and Jamie in EastEnders, have reunited 24 years after their characters' ill-fated romance concluded with Jamie's death on Christmas Day in 2002. The pair have joined forces for a National Rail campaign called "Proper Catch-Up Carriage," which encourages people to disconnect from their devices and engage in meaningful conversations.

Cassidy, 43, and Ryder, 45, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, revealing that they had not seen each other in person since filming their final scenes on the soap until this campaign. While they occasionally exchanged messages and emojis, their physical reunion for the campaign marked their first encounter in nearly a quarter of a century.

"When we saw each other on the train platform [for the campaign], we just didn't let go of one another," Cassidy said. "It was like coming home. We are like brother and sister. It's been 24 years but I am so pleased we've seen each other and we won't leave it that long again."

Both actors experienced personal difficulties around the time they filmed their final scenes. Cassidy's mother passed away in May 2022, and she channeled her grief into her storyline. Ryder, in an interview with The Sun, stated that he left the soap at the height of his fame at age 21 because the intense attention became overwhelming. "I just couldn't go anywhere," he recalled. "I was getting so much attention and stuff - there was such a big impact in that sense. It was hard and a whirlwind. It was a mad thing and I didn't really align with it."

At the peak of their fame, Cassidy and Ryder were reportedly asked to leave a McDonald's due to insufficient security. Ryder was a frequent fixture on teen magazine covers, often mobbed when out in public, and even experienced a stalker. He went on to marry Hear'Say singer Kym Marsh in August 2002. Though he had stepped back from professional limelight, his personal life arguably increased his public profile. The couple separated six years later. Ryder is now in a relationship with Ella and they have a daughter named Marnie, aged five.

Cassidy is in a long-term relationship with BBC cameraman Marc Humphrey, and they have a daughter named Joanie, born in 2016. Cassidy also has another daughter, Eliza, from a previous relationship.

Their current lives are more settled than the dramatic events their characters endured on EastEnders. In 2002, 16 million viewers watched as Sonia gave birth to a daughter, Chloe, at the age of 15, unaware she was pregnant. The father was Martin Fowler, with whom she had a one-night stand before dating Jamie. Chloe was eventually given up for adoption.

Tragically, Jamie was killed by Martin Fowler, who accidentally ran him over outside Walford East Tube station shortly after purchasing an engagement ring for Sonia. Ryder mentioned that his family chose not to watch the episode, finding it too "dark and a bit weird."
