Actor Shane Richie, known for his role as Alfie Moon in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, has pleaded not guilty to a drink-driving charge. The plea was entered at Colchester Magistrates Court following an incident on July 29 at a Tesco petrol station in Harlow, Essex.

Police were called to the petrol station after Richie, whose real name is Roche, reportedly argued with staff over vaping on the premises. Video footage taken by staff showed Richie being told he could not smoke, to which he responded, “It’s not smoking” and “This is not a vape.” After staff informed him the vape posed a risk, Richie was recorded saying, “I don’t give a f***” while reaching into his car. The station manager called the police, citing Richie's aggressive behavior.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and arrested Richie, 62, for failing to provide a breath specimen. He was taken to Harlow police station, where a subsequent breath test recorded a reading of 55mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit in the UK is 35mg per 100ml.

During a court appearance via videolink, Richie, appearing under his real name, disputed the prosecution's evidence regarding his comments. Witnesses expected to be called include police officers, the petrol station cashier, and the duty manager.

Richie experienced technical difficulties during the hearing, explaining he was in a hotel and switching between devices. His legal representative, Raj Chada, also noted connection problems.

District Judge Christopher Maynard scheduled a full day's hearing for November 17 of the following year at Colchester Magistrates Court, requiring Richie to attend in person. Richie was granted unconditional bail and apologized for the technical disruptions.

Reports following the arrest have suggested concerns within Richie's circle regarding his demanding work schedule and past associations. Sources cited in The Sun newspaper indicated that Richie has been struggling with the pressures of his role as landlord of the Queen Vic in EastEnders, which involves extensive filming. The reports also mention an upcoming tour and rehearsals, contributing to a strenuous schedule. Some sources speculated that BBC bosses might not overlook the incident and could potentially suspend him. Questions have also been raised regarding his marriage to actress Christie Goddard, with whom he has three children.
